This last Saturday, I took my daughter to the Family Workshop Day at the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, WA. On the last Saturday of each month, they put on an automotive related workshop for kids/families. Saturday's workshop was making electric cars.
Here we are with our kit, getting ready to start.
Getting the axles installed
The design phase...
It actually goes pretty well! It started out going about 2 feet, performing a 180 and repeating. On one test run, it proceeded into the wall and ran uphill about 100 feet until it hit an old fire extinguisher/gas pump display (I cringed as it was an old glass globe pump, and all I saw in my head was it hitting at just the right point to cause it to fall).
In order to attend the Family Workshops, you pay regular admission into the museum (unless you're a member, then you only pay the cost of the kit). This lets you roam around the museum and check out the cars on display:

They also have an old Dodge that you can climb on. I made my daughter start it:
It makes starting noises when you turn the hand crank, the lights turn on, and there's a few other cool things they've done with it.
Next month's Family Workshop is propeller cars, and should be fun. Here's the lineup from the LeMay website:
May 24, 2014 - Propeller Car
June 28, 2014 - Summer Solar Explorations
July 26, 2014 - Summer Solar Explorations
August 23, 2014 - Summer Solar Explorations
So if you want to take your kid/grandkid/random kid to something neat and car related, I suggest hitting one of the upcoming dates.
